What does the pattern really tell you?

Start with paired observations. Measure their association, fit a line, make a prediction and check its uncertainty. Then read a model with several predictors.

What do you know, and what do you want to predict?

Ads across, sales up

The independent variable, x, is the predictor. The dependent variable, y, is the response. A dealer uses advertising counts to predict sales: put ads across the page and cars sold up the page. Each dot records both numbers from one observation. Choosing this direction does not prove that ads cause sales.
Try it: Select a pair and match its two coordinates to a dot.

To predict sales using ads, which is y?

Exam coming up and regression output still feels like a wall of numbers?
