BUS 312Unit 2

From accounting numbers to what finance needs.

The balance sheet and income statement read the way a finance student reads them, Canadian tax band by band, and capital cost allowance with the tax shield it creates.

The balance sheet · Step 1 of 13

The balance sheet identity: assets = liabilities + equity

What the firm ownsWho has a claim on it=Current assets1,050Fixed assets2,950Current liabilities450Long-term debt1,250Shareholders' equity2,300
Cedar Ridge Manufacturing Ltd. · December 31, 2026 · $ thousands · block height = size
The balance sheet is a snapshot at one instant (December 31), not a record of a year. The left side is what the firm owns; the right side is who has a claim on it. Creditors are paid first, so equity is the residual: whatever is left. That is why the identity always balances. It is true by construction.
Try it: Tap any block to look inside it. Then switch to 2025 and watch both sides shrink together.

Shareholders' equity · 2026
The residual: what would be left for the owners after every creditor is paid.

Total$2,300k
Equity = total assets − total liabilities = $4,000k − $1,700k = $2,300k. If an asset lost value tomorrow, the creditors would still be owed the same; the owners would absorb the loss.
Assets = current assets + fixed assets
$1,050k + $2,950k = $4,000k
Liabilities + equity = current liabilities + long-term debt + shareholders' equity
$450k + $1,250k + $2,300k = $4,000k
